Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin
Abstract
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is recognized for its role in collecting, collating, analyzing, and disseminating data on the Nigerian economy. It has made available as much information as possible through its regular publications such as the Monthly, Half-Year, and Annual Reports, as well as the Economic and Financial Review and the Intermediate Economic and Financial Indicators. However, the bulk of the statistics published in these documents have focused mainly on the current and irregular reporting periods. This has led to a gap in the availability of relevant statistics in the country. The first issue of the CBN Strategic Bulletin presents statistical data on various aspects of the Nigerian economy, particularly the banking, finance, production, consumption, communication, and external sectors. This bulletin provides a solid data base that encompasses almost the entire spectrum of economic activities, including banking, finance, production, consumption, communication, and the external sector. The dearth of relevant statistics in Nigeria is common knowledge, but the Bulletin will help bridge the gap in data supply and reduce the demand for data from the Central Bank of Nigeria by the general public. Individuals and institutions in both private and public sectors can use the data in this publication to analyze historical and current developments in the economy. Users are encouraged to send constructive comments to assist the Central Bank in improving the quality and content of subsequent editions of the Strategic Bulletin. In conclusion, the CBN's Research and Statistics Department has made the Statistical Bulletin a reality, setting a creditable track record as the sectoral data bank for the financial system.
